The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a second quarter scoring outburst to defeat #23 Haverford College, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-4 on the season.
Haverford started with the first two goals of the game in the opening minutes, but UMW rallied for two to tie the score.
Molly Ryan Gates opened the scoring for the Eagles at 8:00 on an
Ashley Firesheets assist, and
Anna Dube added another less than a minute later. The Fords then scored three straight to take a 5-2 advantage.
The second quarter belonged to the Eagles, who outscored the Fords, 6-1. Firesheets opened the scoring at 13:49, and was followed by a pair of
Abigail Fisher goals 21 seconds apart, which tied the score. Firesheets scored at 11:59 on a
Sadie Laughlin assist,
Molly Ryan Gates followed with another at 7:46, and Firesheets added another with 4:32 left on an
Ava Windham assist. Haverford scored late to push the score to 8-6 at halftime.
Haverford started the third with a score to pull to within one, but back-to-back goals from Firesheets gave UMW a three-goal lead that would stand up, thanks in no small part to goalie
Cece Van Blenis, who stopped several free position shots and several in field action to preserve the win.
Harveford led in shots, 28-24. Van Blenis made 11 saves on the day.
The Eagles will be back in action on March 25 at home against Roanoke College at 6:00 p.m.
