Sophomore midfielder
Sadie Laughlin scored a career-high six goals and added an assist, as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated St. Mary's College of MD, 18-9, on Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary's City. The Eagles improve to 6-5 on the season.
After an SMC goal, Laughlin opened the Eagles' scoring at 8:02 of the first on an
Ashley Firesheets assist. The Seahawks answered with a pair of goals to take a 3-1 lead, but UMW closed the first with three straight of their own to lead, 4-3.
Anna Dube scored with 2:33 left in the frame, and was followed by Laughlin at 1:32 and
Kimber Konen on a
Molly Ryan Gates assist with 50 seconds left.
The Seahawks scored to open the second on a player-up chance, but the Eagles answered with four straight. Laughlin scored at 12:19, followed by Ava WIndham from Dube at 11:45.
Emma Walsh scored at 8:36, and
Annabelle Buck capped the run at 4:49 from
Maura Schroeder.
St. Mary's drew to within 8-7 with two to close the second and one to open the third, but Buck stemmed the tide at 8:38 on Laughlin's assist. After another SMC score that pulled the margin to 9-8, Dube scored at 3:39 and Laughlin again on an
Abigail Fisher assist at 2:27.
St. Mary's opened the fourth by cutting the margin to 11-9, but seven straight Eagle goals in the fourth put the game away. Fisher and Laughlin each scored twice in the period, with WIndham, Firesheets, and Schroeder each providing one.
The Eagles led in shots, 38-23, as well as draw controls, 15-13. Goalie
Cece Van Blenis made three saves in 30 minutes, and
Adrianna Hernandez made four saves in the second half.
UMW will host fourth-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at 1 pm in Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference action.
