UMW Baseball Sweeps CCNY on Sunday to Improve to 5-2 on the Season; Biggs K's 15

Sophomore Hank Biggs struck out 15 batters in six innings in the opener, and and six pitchers combined to allow two hits in the nightcap, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a doubleheader from City College of New York, 6-1 and 4-1, on Sunday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles, winners of four straight, improve to 5-2 overall.

In the opener, UMW jumped ahead with a run in the first. Thomas Weaver led off with a double down the left field line, moved to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a Stephen Johnston single. The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third, as Brian Burns ws hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on an error. After Kyle Bynum walked, Bryce Runey walked with the bases loaded to plate Johnston.

In the fourth, Weaver singled and stole second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Weaver scored on a single by Christian Hague. Tyler Truslow followed with an RBI single to score Bynum.

The Eagles added a run in the sixth on an opposite field home run to left center by Johnston.

Biggs carried a no hitter into the sixth, striking out 15 batters in six innings, while wallking one. At one point, Biggs struck out nine straight batters. Alex Shapiro struck out three in the seventh, allowing one unearned run.

Johnston singled and homered, scoring twice and driving in two. Weaver singled, doubled, and scored twice for UMW.

In the nightcap, the Eagles opened with a pair of runs in the first. Weaver singled and stole second, before Burns walked. Johnston was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and all the runners advanced on a wild pitch. Truslow followed with an RBI groundout.

In the second, UMW scored after Ramsis Ruiz walked and advanced to second on a single from Garrett Lyons. Lyons scored on an error.

The Beavers answered with a run in the third, but the Eagles got that run back with one in the fifth. Kyle Bynum singled to center and advanced to third on an error. Bryce Runey provided an RBI groundout.

Robert Cross gained the win on a staff game decision, allowing one hit in 2.1 inningsm with two walks and four strikeouts as one of six Eagle pitchers. Cole Gabriele, Hague, Bryant White, Shapiro, and Johnston combined for 4.2 innings of one hit relief, with nine strikeouts.

The Eagles will be back in action on Thursday when they host Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m.
