The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell in the Coast-to-Coast Conference semifinal matchup against Christopher Newport, 13-6, on Thursday afternoon in Salisbury, Md.
The Eagles fell behind by a pair of runs in the second inning before getting one back in the bottom half when
Tommy Martinez reached on an infield single to drive home
Noah Roots, 2-1. The Captains scored a pair in the fifth inning to push their lead to 4-2.
But Mary Washington cut the deficit in half at 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when
Bobby Ayscue drove his fifth homer of the season down the right field line for a solo shot. In the seventh, however, CNU added four more runs to add to its lead, 8-2.
In the eighth, though, the Eagles proved they weren't done yet at
Burke Steifman singled home a pair of runs to cut into the lead, 8-4, then
Luke Guerzon drew a pinch-hit walk to drive in another run that added to UMW's comeback, 8-5.
UMW ran out of steam in the ninth as CNU added five more to its lead to push it to 13-5 as the Eagles added another run in the bottom half of the inning on
