UMW Women's Basketball Tops Wesley, 61-52, in CAC Saturday Matinee

Junior center Brianne Comden scored 11 points to lead a balanced attack as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 61-52 victory over Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at Rosner Arena. The Eagles imporve to 15-3 overall, and 9-2 in CAC action.

The Eagles dominated play in the first quarter, outscoring the Wolverines, 26-4. Senior Sarah Listenbee connected for a pair of jumpers as the Eagles built a 10-2 lead, and sophomore Kelsey Dean added a pair of baskets to up the margin to 17, at 19-2, with 1:38 left in the first. Freshman McKenzie Jenkins capped the first quarter scoring with a three pointer, giving UMW a 26-4 lead after 10 minutes.

In the second, the Eagles used three pointers from Meghan Comer and Megan Green to build a 34-8 advantage, and Elizabeth Dofflemyer connected for five straight to cap the scoring, and the Eagles held a 41-15 lead at halftime.

Wesley trimmed the lead in the third quarter, as both offenses struggled. Wesley outscored UMW, 12-8, in the frame, but the Eagles held a 49-27 lead after three.

In the fourth, Kendall Parker opened with a three pointer to up the lead to 25, but the Wolverines clawed back, chipping away at the lead until they closed the final margin to nine at 61-52 at the final horn. Comden scored five down the stretch.

Comden was the lone Eagle in double figures with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, while Parker added nine. Listenbbee had eight popints and nine rebounds, while Green also added eight.

UMW shot 43.8% from the field (21-48), making 7-19 three pointers and 12-18 free throws. Wesley shot 35.1% (20-57), making 1-17 three pointers and 11-20 free throws.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday when they host York College in Capital Athletic Conference action at 6 p.m. as part of a twinbill with the Eagle men.
