The University of Mary Washington women's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to the College of New Jersey on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles close the year with a record of 16-8.
The Eagles assumed a 2-1 lead after doubles, as the number two team of
Meg Lawlor and
Michelle Meadows won, 8-1, followed by a win at one doubles by
Courtney Goimarac and
Katie Schafer, 8-2. TCNJ won at three, 8-5, to give UMW a 2-1 edge.
In singles, TCNJ won in straight sets at one and six to take a 3-2 lead. Another Lion win at five singles put the visitors one win away, but
Meg Lawlor won at four to cut the deficit to 4-3. Schafer and Meadows advanced to three sets after dropping their first sets, but Meadows fell at three, 6-4, in the third set, in the clinching match.
TCNJ will advance to face Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at UMW at 1:00 p.m.
