UMW Men's Lax Roars From Behind to Top Eastern, 10-9

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team entered the fourth quarter trailing, 9-5, but roared back for five straight goals to defeat Eastern University, 10-9, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground, The Eagles have won two straight by one goal, and improve to 3-2 on the season.

After Eastern scored the first goal of the game four minutes in, the Eagles tied the score midway through the quarter on a goal by junior James Milligan. Eastern went back ahead on a man-up score less than a minute later, and scored three straight to take a 4-1 advantage.

The game of runs continued, as UMW responded with three straight to knot the score before halftime. Milligan scored on a Tanner Boone assist at 9:51 of the second, and Dylan Borges scored on a Dave Votapek assist at 7:16. Boone tied the score with 6:32 left.

Eastern scored the first two goals of the third. Milligan scored on a Votapek assist to cut the UMW deficit to 6-5, but Eastern responded with three straight to close the quarter with a 9-5 lead.

UMW scored five times in the fourth in a 4:50 span to take the lead. Reece Stone scored ten seconds into play, and Boone followed at 13:41. Vince Reaver scored on a Jackson Rhodes helper at 12:36 to pull UMW to within one, and Tucker Bradley put the UMW Eagles ahead with 10:10 left.

The drama was far from over though, as UMW was assessed a penalty in the final minute. Eastern let a last-second shot fly that was deflected between the shooter and the goal, but Eagle keeper Ryan D'Angelo reacted to snag the save just before the final horn

Mary Washington led in shots, 49-36, and won 15 of 24 faceoffs after dropping most in the early going. D'Angelo made 13 saves in goal in gaining his third win.
