UMW Men's Lacrosse Fends Off Hampden-Sydney, 9-7

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team built a big first half lead, and held on for a 9-7 victory at Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 4-2 on the season.

Freshman Quinn Weaver opened the scoring with a pair of unassisted goals at 11:33 and 7:36. After the Tigers reached the scoreboard at 5:59, Weaver completed the hat trick with his third of the day at 2:28, and Tanner Boone followed at 1:45 to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.

In the second, the Eagles scored three unanswered. James Milligan scored 8:08, and was followed by Dave Votapek at 5:41, on a Boone assist. Tucker Braldey capped the run with a goal at 4:59, and the Eagles carried a 7-1 lead to halftime.

The Tigers scored to open the third quarter, but Votapek answered at 10:07. Hampden-Sydney then scored three straight to close the third, and another pair to open the fourth to pull to within 8-7, but Milligan scored an insurance tally with 6:22 left on a Votapek pass.

The Eagles led in shots, 47-34, and each team grabbed 28 ground balls. UMW goalkeeper Ryan D'Angelo made 14 saves in gaining the win.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday at Haverford College at 1:00 p.m.
