The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dug an early hole and couldn't climb back in a 12-6 loss to Randolph-Macon College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-2 on the season.
The Eagles started slowly, as Randolph-Macon built a 5-0 lead through the first quarter, and 7-0 into the second. Senior
Jacob Fowler got the Eagles on the board following a successful faceoff win on an
Antonio Zeno assist with 8:22 left in the second, which seemed to awaken the Eagles.
After RMC answered with a quick score on the ensuing faceoff, the Eagles scored three straight, with senior
Dave Votapek scoring with 1:42 left in the second on a
Nick Elentrio Jr. assist, to send the game to halftime at 8-2.
UMW added goals to open the third from
Tanner Boone at 12:20 and
James Milligan at 3:24 to pull to within 8-4. The Jackets answered with two of their own to lead, 10-4, entering the fourth quarter. The Eagles saw
Reece Stone score on a Boone assist on a man up chance with 13:46 left, and Boone added another with 4:53 to go. RMCX scored twice in the final minute for the 12-6 margin.
Randolph-Macon led in shots, 45-26, and grabbed 39 ground balls to 34 for UMW. Eagle goalie
Ryan D'Angelo made 14 saves between the pipes.
The Eagles will return to action on March 1 against Rhodes College in Salem, Va. at noon.
