Tanner Boone scored six goals in leading the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory at Shenandoah University in the 2026 season opener. Freshman
Joe Novak recorded four assists, and senior
Dave Votapek added three goals and an assist.
The Eagles scored the only goal of the first quarter, as
Logan Klinger scored on a Novak assist at 14:28. The second quarter saw UMW erupt for seven goals, started in the opening minute from
Reece Stone, on a Klinger assist. Boone netted his first of the game at 9:41, and added another at 6:50 on a Votapek assist.
Votapek followed on a Novak assist at 3:43, and Boone added unassisted scores at 3:07 and 2:29 to lift the Eagle lead to 7-0. After a Hornets score, Votapek capped the second quarter with a goal at 1:39.
UMW continued to shine offensively in the third, tallying another seven scores. Boone opened the third with another tally at 12:54 on a Novak assist, and Votapek added another at 11:40. After a Shenandoah score, Klinger scored on a
Jackson Holt assist at 9:18, and at 6:56,
Tucker Bradley scored a man-up goal assisted by Stone. Boone added another from Novak, and after SU scored, UMW gained late goals from
Kyle Marshall and
A.J. Lembo to close the third.
In the fourth, the Eagles gained a goal from
Connor Paradis on a
Ben Iannantuono assist.
The Eagles led in shots, 47-33, and held a 40-39 edge in ground balls. UMW saw three goalies split time in goal, with
Ryan D'Angelo recording 11 saves, and
Matt Silva and
C.J. Cohen each adding one.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday against Roanoke College at noon.
