UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at #3 Christopher Newport in CLC Semifinal, 13-10

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 decision at third ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon in Newport News, Va. The Eagles close the season with an 8-9 record.

The game stayed tight throughout the first quarter. After five scoreless minutes, CNU took the lead, but senior Dave Votapek knotted the score at 9:39 on an assist from Tanner Boone. The Captains regained the lead, but senior Greyson Reylek tied the score just nine seconds later after a faceoff win with 7:18 left in the first. CNU jumped ahead 4-2, but freshman Joe Novak scored with 1:05 left to pull the Eagles to within one after the first.

The pivotal frame would be the second, as the Eagles were outscored, 4-1. Boone scored on a Vince Reaver assist with 12:11 remaining.

The second half saw the Eagles outscore the Captains, 6-5, but UMW couldn't come all the way back. In the third, the teams alternated goals, with Votapek scoring on a Quinn Weaver pass at 9:06. After a CNU score, Vince Reaver followed on a Votapek assist at 7:42. UMW trailed, 10-6, after three frames.

In the fourth, Tucker Bradley scored on a Jackson Rhodes assist just ten seconds into play. The teams continued to trade goals, with CNU scoring, then Jackson Holt following at 9:31. The Captains went up, 12-8, but Weaver scored with 6:36 to go. CNU added another before Votapek capped the scoring at 24 seconds on a Kyle Marshall assist.

CNU led in shots, 56-23, and ground balls, 38-22. UMW goalkeeper Ryan D'Angelo made 28 saves on the day to achieve a new career high, and extend his season school record with 244 on the year.
