Box Score Nine different players scored goals, as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Meredih College, 15-11, on Wednesday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. The Eagles improve to 11-5 on the season.
The Avenging Angels jumped in front early, scoring a pair of goals in the opening five minutes. First year
Ava Windham got the Eagles on the board at 4:29 on a free position shot, and
Taylar Hackney evened the score with 3:40 left on an assist from
Anna Dube. Meredith scored following the ensuing draw control, but UMW answered with a score from senior
Tori Mueller at 1:56.
Meredith again started strong in the second quarter, netting a pair of scores to move ahead, 5-3, before junior
Ashley Firesheets countered for UMW with 11:25 to go. After an Avenging Angels score, Dube scored with 9:11 to go, and
Maura Schroeder added another on a
Molly Daw pass at 8:47. After Meredith went back ahead,
Abigail Fisher scored on a Daw assist to even the score just before halftime.
The Eagles took charge in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals. Daw opened the run at 12:26 on a Dube assist, before Windham added another free position score at 4:43. Schroeder added her second on a Dube assist to close the quarter.
After Meredith opened the fourth with a score, UMW built a comfortable lead with goals from Hackney, Mueller, and
Sadie Laughlin. Fisher and Laughlin would add scores later en route to victory.
The Eagles led in shots, 34-29, as well as ground balls, 13-10.
Allison Carolan made six saves for the Eagles, while
Cece Van Blenis added two.
UMW will close the regular season on Saturday at Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
