Big Comeback Sparks UMW Men's Lacrosse Past St. Mary's, 10-8, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dug itself an early hole but was able to climb its way out in a 10-8 victory at St. Mary's College of MD on Wednesday night. The Eagles even their season record at 8-8.

In the first quarter, senior Jackson Popeck put the Eagles on the scoreboard first, at 9:13, on an assist from Dave Votapek. But from there, the Seahawks went on a 6-0 run in less than an eight minute span to build a five-goal advantage through 15 minutes.

In the second quarter, Popeck started the rally with a score assisted by Brady Leischner at the 10:00 mark. Senior Sterling Colgan scored on a Popeck assist at 6:34, but the Seahawks answered at 1:25. UMW capped the secnd quarter scoring as Popeck notched his third of the night on a Reece Stone assist with just 16 seconds remaining.

UMW continued to chip away in the third quarter, drawing even by outscoring the hosts, 3-0. Votapek opened the frame with a goal at 12:56, and then junior Henry Moag added a pair of goals, at 4:21 and 2:50, to knot the score at 7-7.

In the fourth, Popeck and Moag continued to provide the offense, as both scored midway through the quarter to up the Eagle advantage to 9-7. The Seahawks cut the margin to one, but freshman Logan Cardwell added an insurance tally in the final minute for the two-goal margin of victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 44-32,and the Eagles won 12-22 faceoffs. Eagle goalkeeper Wyatt Marttin made 11 saves on the night.

UMW will visit Kean University on Sunday in the first round of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament, with a 1 p.m. faceoff.
