Balanced Attack Lifts UMW Men's Lax to CLC Tournament Win Over Kean, 12-7

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team saw six different players record multiple points, as the Eagles defeated Kean University, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon in the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament First Round at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-8 on the season.

The Eagles opened a strong first quarter advantage. Freshman Joe Novak scored on a Quinn Weaver assist at 13:25, before Kean knotted the score at 7:56. The UMW shots began to connect with regularity, as A.J. Lembo scored on a man-up chance, assisted by Novak at 6:11, and Vince Reaver scored on a Reece Stone pass at 2:24. The Eagles scored again just 15 seconds later as Brady Leischner scored on a Greyson Reylek faceoff win and assist.

After Kean pulled to within two to open the second, the Eagles reeled off three straight scores in a pivotal stretch. Weaver scored unassisted at 11:56, and sophomore Tanner Boone scored twice, at 9:41 and 5:04, with the latter coming off a Novak assist. The Cougars scored two of the last three goals if the second, with a Reylek score sandwiched between at 2:22 on a Rex Colliver assist.

After Kean scored the lone goal of the third quarter, UMW erupted again in the fourth. Reaver scored on a Weaver pass in the opening minute, and Dave Votapek added another on a Boone pass at 6:38. Just 35 seconds later, Logan Klinger scored to up the margin to 11-5. Kean answered, but Votapek added his second of the day with 3:50 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 41-38, as well as ground balls (35-23) and faceoffs (13-10). UMW senior goalkeeper Ryan D'Angelo made 13 saves on the day, breaking the school season record with 216 on the campaign.

UMW will visit Christopher Newport University on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in the CLC Tournament semifinal round.
