The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 decision at 24th ranked Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, Va. The Eagles slip to 2-5 on the season.

The homestanding Hornets broke open the scoring with a pair of first quarter goals. In the second, the hosts expanded the lead to 3-0, before the Eagles climbed back to kno the score with three straight. Just 1:11 into the second, Victoria Mueller scored unassisted, and 1:21 later, Abigail Fisher followed with another score. Molly Daw knotted the score with 9:19 remaining, but the Hornets countered with three straight to take a 6-3 lead to halftime.

UMW chipped away in the third, as Caeley Terapane scored on a Fisher assist with 14:13 left. Mueller followed with a free position score with 9:39 remaining to pull the Eagles back to within 6-5. The Hornets capped the scoring for the third.

In the fourth, the Eagles roared out of the gate with three straight to take the lead. Taylar Hackney started the run with 12:42 remaining, and Katie Blair evened the score with 11:39 left. Bridget Crowley followed at 10:59, giving the Eagles an 8-7 advantage. The Hornets scored three straight to grab a 10-8 advantage, and UMW pulled to within one with 3:50 left on a score from Blair.

The Hornets led in shots, 28-23, and both teams had 15 ground balls. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp made nine saves on the day for the Eagles.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday, when the Eagles host Messiah University at 1:00 p.m.
