Behind 13 Hits, UMW Baseball Blows Out Eastern Mennonite, 18-6

Box Score

The Mary Washington baseball team (15-4) had little trouble in its 18-6 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va., using 13 hits and 10 walks to its advantage.

Bobby Ayscue (three hits), Tommy Martinez (two), Noah Roots (two), Oliver Martin (two) and Jacob Christenbury (two) all collected a multi-hit effort in the victory. Ayscue and Roots collected four RBIs each and both tripled. Martin, meanwhile, hit his first career homer as well.

The Royals got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Eagles bats came alive in the third with five runs that scored.

Martinez recorded his first hit of the afternoon with a two-RBI double to start the scoring for the Eagles in the third, then Roots singled a pair home to push the lead to 4-1. Next, Oliver Martin drove in a run by reaching on an error to score Alex Purgason.

Eastern Mennonite would get a run back in the third to cut into the lead, 5-2, but then the Eagles countered with two of their own in the fourth. On a wild pitch Christenbury was able to score the first run, then Ty Lowe grounded out to the shortstop to drive in Burke Steifman. In the fifth, Martin drove a pitch over the wall for his first career homer to push the lead to 8-2.

In the sixth, EMU would score a pair of runs, but then the Eagles put the game out of reach in the seventh with a 10-run frame that would put the mercy rule into effect in the bottom of the seventh.

In their 10-run frame, Ayscue tripled home a pair of runs to get the scoring started. Then, Ayscue would score on a throwing error when Steifman reached on the error. Lowe continued with his hot bat with a double that scored Steifman.

Roots doubled home Purgason and Lowe, while Martin followed with an RBI single, scoring Roots. Next, Ayscue collected his second hit of the frame with a two-RBI single, and finally, the last run was scored when Eric Powell reached on a fielding error that brought home Christenbury.

On the bump, the Eagles, Brendan McComber picked up his third victory of the season, tossing five innings of two-run ball, while striking out eight hitters.

The Eagles are back in action this weekend with a four-game series against Mt. St. Vincent.
