The University of Mary Washington baseball team (RV) battled for all nine innings against No. 21 Pomona-Pitzer, even with a two-run lead entering the middle innings, but ultimately fell, 6-3, in the opening round of the Baltimore Regional on the campus of Johns Hopkins.
The Sagehens took an early lead in the second inning on an RBI single, but it was the only run they could muster in the inning as UMW starter
Gavin Riley was able to escape the jam. And in the third, the Eagles tied the game on
George Rizzo's RBI double to center that plated
Benjamin Rossi.
In the fifth, the Eagles plated two more runs as
Collin Clarkson singled home both
Cole Powers and
Ryan Henson, giving UMW a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, the Sagehens scored a run to cut into the gap, 3-2. And in the sixth, a bases-loaded free pass, then a two-RBI single allowed Pomona-Pitzer to take a 5-3 lead before a solo home run in the eighth put the game out of reach for the Eagles.
Eric Powell and Rossi each collected a pair of hits for Mary Washington as Rizzo, Clarkson, Henson, and Powers added one each.
Gavin Riley put up a solid start for the Eagles as the lefty went 5.1 innings, yielding four runs (three earned), while working out of a few jams in the process.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for their elimination game with Pfeiffer at 11:30 a.m. at Babb Field in Baltimore, MD. With a victory, UMW would move on to the 6 p.m. game against the loser of Johns Hopkins-Pomona-Pitzer.
