UMW Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over John Carroll

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Mary Washington baseball team (14-3) took care of John Carroll (4-9) in comeback fashion in both games of a Saturday doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 5-4

Using a four-run sixth inning, the Eagles were able to tie the Blue Streaks at four, heading into the back-third of the ballgame. John Carroll jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth inning, scoring one in the fourth, then three in the fifth.

In the sixth, the Eagles' rally started when Tommy Martinez singled to drive in Burke Steifman, while Charlie Grove doubled home Ty Lowe and advanced Martinez to third. Trailing by two -- and with two outs -- Oliver Martin tied the game with his two-run single to left field.

Following a scoreless seventh, Alex Purgason delievered the game-winning knock with a base hit through the left side that scored George Rizzo after he came on as a pinch-runner.

Justin Ritz battled through six innings, yielding three runs (four total), putting the Eagles in position to win the first game. Then, Jame Kotula recorded the win by pitching the next two innings -- both were scoreless. And finally, Griffin Graham recorded his first save of the season, throwing a flawless ninth inning.

Game 2 - Eagles win - 5-2

The Eagles recorded their second comeback victory of the season when they scored four runs in the fifth, then one more in the sixth to pull away, 5-2. UMW fell behind by two runs in the third, but starter Gavin Riley battled back to throw seven innings of two-run ball as he struck out nine.

In the fifth, Ryan Schwarz doubled home Oliver Martin to score a run, then Steifman singled home Schwarz to tie the score at two. Then, Bobby Ayscue unloaded on a pitch that flew over the left field wall to give the Eagles the lead, 4-2. UMW would score another in the sixth on Jacob Christenbury's RBI double.

After Riley departed after the seventh, Eric McDaniel and Ryan Northup combined to pitch the eighth before Connor Hassan recorded his second save with three strikeouts in a flawless ninth.

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday to finish out the series with John Carroll. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
