UMW Men's Lax Tops Eastern, 14-8, on Rainy Wednesday Evening

Box Score

The University of Mary Washiongton jumped out to an early lead and pulled away late in a 14-8 victory over Eastern University on Wednesday evening at a rainy Battleground. The Eagles (of UMW) improve to 3-2 on the season.

UMW pulled ahead at 9:49, when All-America long stick Keegan Shipe netted the first of his two scores, on an assist from Dave Votapek. Votapek followed with a score of his own at 7:47 on a Jackson Popeck assist. After an Eastern score, Ethan Mollman scored on a heads-up goal from just inside midfield, and Votapek scored on a Henry Moag assist in the final seconds to give UMW a 4-1 cushion after 15 minutes.

Eastern opened the second quarter scoring, before Votapek scored on a Popeck assist at 10:38 left. From there, it was all Eastern, who scored four straight to take a 6-5 edge to halftime.

The host Eagles responded in the third, as Moag, Popeck, and Jackson Rhodes each scored in the opening six minutes. After Eastern stemmed the tide, UMW was right back at it, with Shipe scoring his second, and Ethan Castleman following with a minute left to give the home side a 10-7 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The fourth was much like the third, as Reece Stone and Popeck scored early, and Castleman scored a pair late for the big win for UMW.

Votapek had three goals and two assists, and Castleman three goals for UMW, while Popeck added two goals and three assists.

UMW led in shots, 44-35, and ground balls, 44-30. UMW junior goalkeeper Wyatt Martin had 12 saves, including numerous point-blank stops. John Staugaitis had nine gorund balls after winning 14 faceoffs.

The Eagles will be back in action on March 6 when they host Washington College at 4:00 p.m.
