Box Score

The University of Mary Washington baseball jumped jumped on top, fell behind, but roared back with a three-run sixth inning and held on the rest of the way in defeating 10th ranked Christopher Newport University, 6-5, on Friday in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in Salisbury, Md.

The Eagles forged ahead in the top of the first inning, as Jacob Christenbury singled, advancd to second on a walk to Bobby Ayscue, and scored on a single from Ty Lowe. UMW tacked on another in the second, as Luke Guerzon walked and advanced to third on a CNU error. He came in to score on a ground out by Christenbury.

Christopher Newport went in front with a four-run, four-hit fourth inning, but Ryan Dudak came on to end the threat with the bases loaded and two outs by enticing a ground out. The Eagles would get one back in the top of the fifth, as Ayscue led off with a single and scored on a Ryan Schwarz sacrifice fly.

CNU added to its lead with a run in the sixth, but the Eagles pieced together a three-run seventh to take charge. Lowe led off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Noah Roots. Schwarz bunted both runners into scoring position, and Guerzon reached on a fielder's choice to plate Lowe, cutting the deficit to 5-4.

After a pitching change, Xavier Herring provided a run-scoring single, and Guerzon scored what would be the winning run on a wild pitch.

Junior Jamie Kotula came on in relief and retired the Captains in order in the seventh, induced a double play in facing the minimum in the eighth, and pitched around a one-out single in the ninth to end the game with a strikeout in gaining the save.

Lowe led the offense with four hits, while Herring added three hits, and Ayscue a single and double. Gabe Delgado gained the win in relief, as the Eagles used five pitchers, allowing one run on two hits in two innings. Kotula allowed just one hit and a walk in three scoreless innings of relief.
