Balanced Attack Leads UMW Women's Lax Past St. Mary's, 17-12

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team raced to a big lead and cruised to a 17-12 victory over St. Mary's College of Md. on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-5 on the season.

Freshman Maya Koebke opened the scoring at 14:27 of the first, and, after a Seahawk score, senior Kayla Sarazin added another with 12:24 remaining. St. Mary's used a man-up goal to tie the score, but the Eagles ended the quarter with three straight goals. Sarazin opened the run at 10:14, and was followed by Koebke at 4:47 on an assist from Molly Daw. Katie Blair capped the scoring at 1:28, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead after 15 minutes.

In the second, The Seahawks climbed back with the first two goals of the frame, but UMW responded with the next four to seize control. Erin Steinberg scored with 7:34 left on a Daw assist, and Daw followed with one of her own at 6:28. Koebke netted her third of the day before Ashley Firesheets completed the run with 4:15 remaining.

The Eagle offense conitnued to shine in the third, scoring three straight to open the quarter and outscoring the guests, 6-1. Koebke netted the first two of the third, followed by Daelyn Gregory, at 9:05. After a SMC score, the Eagles reeled off three more, with Bridget Crowley scoring two and Firesheets one. Daw and Leanne Larkin scored in the fourth, as the Eagles handled a Seahawk run for the four-goal win.

Koebke led UMW with fivw goals and an assist, while Daw added two goals and two assists. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp had 11 saves in 53 minutes, and Allison Carolan added two saves in relief.

UMW led in shots, 35-30, as well as ground balls, 15-13. The Eagles will return to action on Saturday at 11:00 am at Denison University.
