Box Score Freshman pitcher Jackson Myers didn't allow a hit until the eighth inning in a 13 strikeout performance, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team topped John Carroll University, 10-3, on Sunday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 16-7 on the season.
UMW jumped ahead with a run in the first, as Jacob Christenbury walked, Jonathan Sedmak singled, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly from Ty Lowe. The Eagles broke the game open with five in the fourth. Bobby Ayscue singled and Lowe walked before Luke Guerzon was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Noah Roots followed with an RBI single. Tim Blankenship added a two-run single to left field, and Ryan Schwarz scored on a fielder's choice. Blankenship scored on an infield single from Ayscue.
The Eagles added two runs in the sixth, on an RBI double from Ayscue, who later stole home. The Eagles added a pair in the seventh, after loading the bases on two hit by pitches and a walk. A fielder's choice with an error allowed Andrew Gerhart and Blankenship to score.
All the while, Myers cruised, allowing just a walk in seven innings, before allowing a one-out double. Myers (3-0) struck out 13 on the day with just one hit and a walk yielded.
Ayscue led the offense with two singles and a double, while Roots added two hits.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a noon dobleheader against Alfred State University at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium.
