UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls Short Against Catholic, 15-13

Four UMW players notched two goals on Wednesday evening when the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team fell short, 15-13, against Catholic University. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season.

Catholic opened the game by scoring five straight goals in seven minutes, with three coming from Victor Rosado. Mary Washington answered with two goals of their own, by fellow seniors Garrett Keogh and Hunter Tipton, with 3:43 and 3:59 left in the opening period.

The second period was full of action and back-and-forth goal-scoring. Michael Seraphin-Jones picked up his first goal of the season 11 seconds into the 2nd, making the score 6-3 Catholic. Henry Moag, Jake Furman, and Tipton notched the other three Mary Washington goals in the first half at 9:03, 3:49, and 2:57, respectively. Senior J.D. Nozemack was a big factor in the scoring game, adding three assists to his stats.

The Eagles dominated and scored 5 goals in the 3rd period, which tied the match at 11. Seraphin-Jones scored his second unassisted goal at 14:21, with Owen Castleman, Carter Lynch, and Sterling Colgan finding the back of the net for the first time, with Moag notching his second goal of the game – both assisted by Nozemack, to end the 3rd period swing.

The Cardinals outscored the Eagles in the 4th, 4-2, to fight towards the win. Owen Castleman and Furman both scored their second goal at 4:51 and 2:43, respectively, to put the Eagles' scoring to an end.

Seraphin-Jones, Castleman, Moag, and Tipton tallied two goals apiece, with Nozemack leading all players in assists with six; Riley Green led the Eagles with four ground balls, with John Staugaitis and Bryce Ridge adding three ground balls apiece.

In the end, UMW outshot Catholic, 43-31, won 15 of 31 faceoffs, while Catholic led in ground balls, 39-33. UMW Green made six saves in 60 minutes of action, while Mary Washington forced 21 turnovers to Catholics' 13.

The Eagles travel to Shenandoah University on Saturday to battle the Hornets at 1 p.m.
