Nozemack's 10 Points Lead UMW Men's Lax to 20-14 Win at Randolph-Macon in '23 Lidlifter

Senior attackman J.D. Nozemack notched a career-high seven assists to go with three goals, and moved into second place in school history in scoring, as the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team topped Randolph-Macon College, 20-14, on Saturday in both teams' season opener.

The pivotal period in the game was the first, as the Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 advantage. Freshman Carter Lynch opened the scoring for the Eagles at 12:16, and senior Jackson Popeck netted another on a pass from Nozemack at 8:41. After the Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 2-1, UMW responded with four straight to take a commanding advantage. Senior Sterling Colgan scored twice in the run, while Ethan Castleman and Henry Moag each scored once.

Randolph-Macon scored three of the first four of the second quarter to pull to within 7-4, but the Eagles, as they would do each tme the hosts pulled close, found matching scores to keep the lead intact. Senior Hunter Tipton netted a pair of goals in the second, with Popeck and Moag adding one each.

The Eagles scored four of the first five goals of the third quarter, as Lynch, Moag, Garrett Keogh, and Castleman all tallied goals. After two RMC goals cut the margin to 14-9, Nozemack and Jackson Davis responded, and Popeck and Keegan Shipe kept the lead in check before Nozemack capped the scoring with two goals.

Nozemack led the offense with three goals and seven assists, while Lynch added three goals and one assist and Popeck added three scores.

In all, UMW was outshot, 44-43, won 23 of 36 faceoffs, and led in ground balls, 29-25. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made 13 saves in 60 minutes of action, while John Staugaitis collected seven ground balls.

The Eagles will make their home debut on Wednesday against Catholic University at 3:30 p.m.
