Box Score 2 The Univerity of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a pair of games at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles were edged by Christopher Newport, 13-12, and then fell to the Sea Gulls, 11-1.
In the opener, the Eagles started with a flourish, thanks to a second inning grand slam from Jacob Christenbury, followed by an RBI on a sacrifice bunt one inning later from Christenbury. CNU scored four in the third, four in the fourth, and another in the fifth. The Eagles battled back with two runs in the sixth, as Noah Roots prvided an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from Xavier Herring.
The Eagles turned a 9-7 deficit into an 11-9 lead with four in the seventh, as Owen Reilly rapped a two-run single, followed by RBI groundouts from Ty Lowe and Roots. The Captains scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth, before UMW capped the scoring with one in the ninth on a Roots solo home run.
Christenbury was 1-3 with five RBI, and Roots doubled and homered with three RBI. Noah Adcock-Howeth absorbed the loss in relief, allowing one run in 1/3 of an inning on two hits.
In the second game of the day, the Eagles battled the host Salisbury, falling, 11-1. The game remained tight into the midde innings, as Salisbury held a 1-0 lead through three, but then the hosts added five in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth to break the game open. UMW scored in the eighth as Luke Guerzon tripled and Burke Steifman followed with an RBI single.
Steifman led the offense with a pair of hits. Brendan McComber took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 4.0 innings on five hits, with four walks and two strikeouts.
