UMW Baseball Drops Twinbill to #11 Salisbury on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington dropped a pair of games to 11th ranked Salisbury University, 8-1 and 11-5, on Saturday afternoon on a picturesque day at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles slip to 16-21 on the season.

Both starting pitchers started strong in game one, as UMW held a 1-0 lead after three innings. The Eagles plated a run in the third, as Jacob Christenbury walkedand advanced to second on an error. Owen Reilly provided a single to center field to plate Christenbury.

The Sea Gulls, held without a base runner in the first three innings, erupted for four runs in the fourth inning, and added four more in the eighth.

Christenbury doubled and walked and scored UMW's run. Sophomore Alex Kobersteen took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in seven innings, with three walks and three strikeouts. Ryan Dudak struck out five in in two innings of relief.

In game two, Salisbury scored once in the first, but the Eagles gained the lead with two in the second. With two outs, Sam Freeborne and Luke Guerzon singled and Chris Rubano walked to load the bases, and Christenbury followed with a two-run single to center.

The Sea Gulls scored three in the third, but the Eagles kept fighting back, scoring one in the third after Noah Roots doubled and Reilly singled and Ty Lowe notched a sacrifice fly, and another in the fourth as Christenbury walked and came all the way around to score on an errant throw on a pickoff attempt.

Salisbury went ahead with a run in the fifth, but UMW again knotted the score with one in the bottom of the frame on a Lowe RBI double. The Sea Gulls went on to score three in the sixth and three in the eighth.

Brendan McComber took the loss for UMW, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings, with two walks and a strikeout. 

The Eagles will visit Randolph-Macon College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
