UMW Women's Lax Tops Meredith, 16-6, in Home Opener

Sophomore attacker Katie Blair scored five goals and junior Kayla Sarazin added three goals and an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over Meredith University on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in UMW's home opener. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

Blair put the Eagles ahead early, scoring her first 1:39 into the game, and senior Rebecca Pullen followed less than a minute later. Junior Erin Steinberg followed with and unassisted score at 10:42, and the Eagles wouldn't look back. After a Meredith score, Blair capped the first quarter scoring in the final minute with her second score.

The Avenging Angels opened the second with a goal to cut the margin to 4-2, but the Eagles responded shortly thereafter, scoring three goals in 2:15. Blair started the streak with 9:29 left on a Sarazin assist, and Pullen followed with her second of the day with 8:40 on the clock. Sarazin scored unassisted with 7:14 remaining, building the Eagle lead to 7-2. After a Meredith score, Blair scored again to cap the second quarter, with UMW carrying an 8-3 advantage.

In the third, Blair again started the offensive fireworks, scoring with 13:05 left, and Sarazin added the next two, the first coming at 12:08 on a Clare Madden assist and the next unassisted with 10:47 left. After Meredith found the nets, Steinberg scored on a Carly Lanzarotta assist at 2:39, and Lanzarotta joined the scoring column with 1:28 remaining.

Steinberg and Madden opened the fourth quarter for the Eagles, before Meredith added a pair of goals to draw back to within nine, at 15-6. Freshman Molly Daw capped the scoring with 2:24 remaining for the final score of the game.

UMW led in shots, 24-16, as well as ground balls, 20-14. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made three saves in 45 minutes, Brooke Barsella made four stops in ten minutes of relief, and freshman Allison Carolan closed the contest without seeing a shot in the final five minutes. Grace Clarke had three caused turnovers and two ground balls for the Eagles.

UMW will return to action on Tuesday, when the Eagles host Lebanon Valley College at 4:00 p.m.
