UMW Men's Lacrosse Races Past Bridgewater, 13-9

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead and never relinqushed the lead in a 13-9 victory over Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles move to 3-3 on the season.

Mary Washington opened the scoring less than a minute into play, as Cameron Walker scored on a Garrett Keogh assist at 14:02. After Bridgewater tied the score at 11:34, UMW reeled off the next four goals of the game. Senior Kristophe Newman scored the next two, on an assist from Jackson Davis at 9:35, and another on a flying unassisted tally with 8:48 left. Long stick middie Nathan Turney gave the Eagles a lift with a score with 7:44 to play in the first, and the score stood at 4-1 after 15 minutes.

In the second, Newman opened the scoring at 14:13, and the teams traded the next four scores, as Ethan Castleman scored at 10:41 . Bridgewater then scored the final three goals of the second, to draw to within 6-5 at halftime.

UMW was able to maintain the lead in the third, as J.D. Nozemack opened the scoring at 14:03, and the teams would again trade the final four scores of the frame. Each time Bridgewater would cut the deficit to one, UMW had an answer. Jackson Davis scored on a Nozemack feed at 6:21, and Nozemack scored again with 2:33 remaining to give UMW a 9-7 lead heading to the fourth.

Castleman scored with 10:05 left in the fourth, but Bridgewater answered at 9:15, to draw to within 10-8. UMW put the affiar to rest in the final 4:14, with Walker scoring twice on a pair of Nozemack assists, and Clark Saben added another inside of three minutes remaining. Bridgewater scored with 1:40 left, but would pull no closer.

Walker and Newman each scored three times for UMW, and Nozemack added two goals and three assists. 

Bridgewater led in shots, 39-34, while UMW led in ground balls, 36-28. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made 15 saves between the pipes, and John Staugaitis had eight ground balls and won 15 faceoffs.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday as they visit Greensboro College at 1:00 p.m.
