UMW Women's Lacrosse Edges Randolph-Macon, 11-10, on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Randolph-Macon College, 11-10, in a classic back-and-forth battle in Ashland, Va., on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a Rebecca Pullen goal at 11:37 on an assist from Katie Blair. After the Jackets tied the score, UMW went back ahead with 58 seconds left in the first, as Katie Blair scored unassisted. RMC scored in the final seconds of the first to tie the score at 2-2.

The Eagles began to pull away with three straight scores to open the second. Rachael Oestrike started the streak at 13:55 on a Clare Madden assist, and Samantha Stachowiak added another at 7:38. Madden capped the run at 6:33, as the Eagles led, 5-2. The Yellow Jackets followed with the next two goals to draw to within 5-4, but the Eagles responded with two more, from Blair and Erin Steinberg, to regain a three-score lead with 2:44 left before haltime. RMC scored the final two goals to draw to within 7-6 by halftime.

In the third quarter, Kayla Sarazin started the action with a goal with 13:43 remaining, on a Maya Levin assist. The Yellow Jackets scored the next two to tie the score at 8-8, but Blair added another score in the final seconds of the period to give the Eagles a 9-8 cushion with 15 minutes to play.

The teams continued to trade goals in the fourth quarter. Bridget Crowley scored on a Blair assist with 13:42 left. RMC answered to draw to within one, but Sarazin scored unassisted for the eventual game winner with 9:57 remaining. The Eagles allowed one score in the final 10 minutes, but did not allow the tying goal in holding on for a one-goal win.

Blair led UMW with three goals and two assists, while Sarazin added two goals.

The Eagles led in shots, 30-24, as well as in ground balls, 16-14. UMW goalkeeper Reilly Miller made six saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday at Shenandoah University at 6:00 p.m.
