UMW Men's Lacrosse Doubles Up Marymount, 20-10, on Saturday

Senior Kristophe Newman scored a career-high six goals in leading the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 20-10 victory at Marymount University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 6-4 on the year. 

Newman started the proceedings in a busy offensive first quarter, putting the Eagles ahead less than a minute into play. Cameron Walker followed at 12:16 on a J.D. Nozemack assist to up the lead to 2-0, before the Saints answered with a score. Walker and Nozemack teamed up again at 11:14, and Newman added his second of the day at 10:39 to push the Eagle advantage to 4-1.

Marymount stopped the run with a score at 9:31, but the Eagles responded with two more goals, from Jackson Davis and Newman, and the Eagles led, 6-2, before a pair of Marymount goals closed the quarter.

In the second, the Eagle offense continued to put points on the board, outscoring the hosts, 6-2. Marymount scored the first and last goals of the frame, but the Eagles filled in the gap with six straight. Ethan Castleman started the run on a Grant Cragg assist at 10:35, and Nozemack followed at 9:33. Walker scored on a Garrett Keogh feed at 8:58, and Nozemack added another at 8:13. Michael Seraphin-Jones and Newman added talies, and the Eagles carried a 12-6 lead to halftime.

UMW outscored the Saints, 3-2, in the third, with Newman scoring twice and Keogh adding another. In the fourth, Hunter Tipton opened the scoring, and after a Saints goal, Nozemack added two more goals to build the lead to 18-9. Marymount added their tenth score before the Eagles closed the game with tallies from Bryce Ridge and Jackson Popeck.

Marymount edged the Eagles in shots, 48-47, while the Eagles led in ground balls, 47-36. Riley Green led the Eagle defense with 12 saves and seven ground balls, while John Staugaitis scooped 10 ground balls and won 23-34 face offs.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Roanoke College at 4:00 p.m.
