UMW Baseball Splits Saturday DH with John Carroll

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with John Carroll University, dropping the opener, 7-6, before winning the second, 8-6. The Eagles move to 12-9 on the season.

In the first game, John Carroll scored one in the third to take the lead, but UMW came back with two in the fifth. Xavier Herring walked and scored on a triple from Jacob Christenbury, who would score on a single from Bobby Ayscue.

The Eagles added two in the sixth, as Owen Reilly and Ty Lowe singled, and Sam Freeborne walked to load the bases. Burke Steifman plated two runs with a single to left field. The Blue Streaks scored six runs in the seventh, and UMW scored two in the bottom of the seventh to draw to within one, but came up one run short. 

Reilly had two hits for UMW, while Noah Roots doubled and Christenbury tripled. Griffin Graham took the loss, allowing two earned runs on four hits in relief.

In the second game, John Carroll scored two in the first, before UMW answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Bobby Ayscue walked and went to third on a single from Reilly, and scored on a Roots groundout.

The Eagles added another in the second as Chris Rubano walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. UMW scored one in the third, on an Alex Purgason RBI single. After a JCU run in the fourth, the Eagles scored three, as Jacob Christenbury singled and scored on a wild pitch, and Jonathan Sedmak added a two-run double.

John Carroll tied the game with three runs in the sixth, but UMW went ahead to stay with two runs in the seventh. Purgason walked and scored on an error, and Sam Freeborne scored on another miscue.

Roots led UMW with two hits, while Sedmak added the big double. Justin Ritz gained the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in nine innings, with two walks and five strikeouts.

The Eagles will host Marymount University for a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
