UMW Men's Lax Falls at Haverford in Nailbiter, 15-14

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a tough 15-14 decision at Haverford College on Saturday afternoon in Delaware County, Pa. The Eagles slip to 1-3 on the season.

The visiting Eagles came out striong in the first quarter, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. Junior attacker Garrett Keogh opened the scoring for the Eagles at the 11:12 mark of the first quarter on an assist from senior J.D. Nozemack, and senior Kevin Cruz followed at 10:43 unassisted. After Haverford scored its first tally, junior Jackson Davis responded at 7:42. Junior Hunter Tipton scored on a Logan Green feed at 5:51 to up the Eagle advantage to 4-1.

Harverford scored the final two goals of the first and the first of the second to knot the score, but the Eagles regained the lead with 10:19 left in the second, as Sterling Colgan scored on a man-up opportunity on a Cameron Walker assist. Haverford again tied the score, but the Eagles found scores from Walker at 4:18 on a Nozemack assist and from Nozemack with 3:12 to go before halftime to take a 7-5 lead.

The Eagles added to their lead to open the third, as Tipton scored with 13:08 left on an assist from Kristophe Newman, who then scored himself with 10:21 to go. The hosts answered with three straight goals, but Nozemack stemmed the tide with 4:31 left with his second tally of the day. Haverford trimmed the margin to 10-9 to close the third.

In the fourth, Nozemack remained hot with his third score, at 13:28. Haverford scored two tie the score at 11-11, but UMW answered with goals from Keogh at 11:14 and Newman at 9:50, both coming on Nozemack assists. After a Haverford score, Logan Green scored unassisted with 6:58 remaining. The hosts found the nets three times down the stretch to take the one-goal victory.

Nozemack had three goals and four assists to pace UMW, Newman added two goals and an assist. 

Mary Washington was outshot, 42-30, and Haverford led in ground balls, 37-30. Junior goalie Riley Green made 12 saves between the pipes for the Eagles.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Lebnon Valley College at 3:30 p.m.
