Kirkland's PK Lifts UMW Men's Soccer Past Salisbury, 1-0, in C2C Semifinal

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team overcame a first half red card to capitalize on a Josh Kirkland penalty kick early in the second half in defeating Salisbury University, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles improve to 10-4-2 and advance to the C2C Championship for the sixth straight season, on Sunday morning.

The game stood scoreless for the first 33 minutes, but the Eagles were dealt a blow with a red card in the 36th minute. The teams remained tied at 0-0 to intermission.

Early in the second, the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the penalty area, and Kirkland connected for his league-leading 16th goal of the season, at 50:53. Salisbury then drew a red card in the 66th minute, and the teams played scoreless for the final 34 minutes, 10 on 10.

The Eagles led in shots, 14-8, and the Sea Gulls led in corner kicks, 8-5. UMW goalkeeper Griffin Hemmendinger made three saves in picking up the shutout.

UMW will advance to the C2C Championship on Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in Salisbury against top-seeded Christopher Newport, who downed UW Whitewater in overtime on Friday. The matchup between the two schools is the fifth matchup in six years between the two in the final.
