The University of Mary Washington survived a fourth quarter run with one of its own, and found two key defensive stops at the end to propel past Gettysburg College, 53-49, on Sunday afternoon in Ashland, Va. The Eagles move to 3-0 on the season.

In a game that remained tight throughout, Gettysburg held the lead for much of the procedings. UMW was able to tie the score at 12-12 after one quarter, and trailed, 29-26, at halftime. The Eagles outscored the Bullets, 10-7, in the third to knot the score again, only to see Gettysburg start the fourth on an 8-0 run.

From there, the Eagles countered with a 12-0 run of their own, and after seeing the Bullets score five straight to regain the lead at 49-48, gained a basket from senior Ashley Martin and three free throws from senior Molly Sharman for the win. Sandwiched between those points were two key defensive stops, as the Eagles gained a jump ball possession after tying up the offensive Gettysburg player in the post, and a rebound from Sharman.

Junior guard Keagan Schwab led the Eagles with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Martin added 10 points and five boards.

The Eagles shot 42.9% from the floor (18-42), making 4-11 three point attempts and 13-18 free throws. Gettysburg shot just 24.3% (17-70), making 3-25 three point attempts and 12-19 free throws. Gettysburg held a 42-38 edge in rebounding.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Mary Baldwin University at 6:00 p.m. in Virginia Beach as part of the Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament.
