The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 61-48 decision to eighth-ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon in the 2025 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Championship.
The Eagles started swiftly, starting the game on a 12-2 run over the first 7:07, as first year forward
Elizabeth Barry scored seven points in the opening stretch. The Eagles led, 14-8, after the first quarter.
CNU pulled to within four to open the second, but baskets from
Leila Carter and Maddie Jenisch return the Eagle advantage to eight, at 18-10, with 8:49 left in the second. Baskets from
McKenna Huff and Jenisch held the Eagle lead, until a late Captains run gave them a 30-25 halftime advantage.
CNU opened the third with three free throws before a three-pointer from senior guard
Megan Baxter returned the margin to five. Sophomore guard
Jenna Steadman added a basket, and after a Breanna Valentine hoop, Steadman hit a three to tie the score at 35 with 4:47 left. Valentine added a jumper with 2:39 remaining to give the Eagles a 40-39 lead, and the lead traded hands twice before ending the third in a 43-43 tie.
After Baxter opened the fourth with a three pointer to give the Eagles the lead, CNU answered with a pair of threes, as the battle continued to go back and forth. CNU built the ir lead to seven before a Baxter cut the margin to 53-48 with 3:54 remaining. CNU scored the final eight points to take the championship.
Baxter made 4-5 field goals, including all three of her three-point attempts en route to a team-high 11 points, while Steadman added nine and Barry eight. Valentine led with eight rebounds and Jenisch posted four assists for the Eagles.
UMW shot 20-47 from the floor (42.6%), making 5-14 three point attempts and 3-8 free throws. Christopher Newport shot 19-55 from the floor (34.5%), making 6-21 three point shots, but went 17-23 from the free throw line. UMW was outrebounded, 30-29.
