UMW Men's Soccer Blanks Lynchburg, 3-0, on Rainy Wednesday

Box Score

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used goals from three different forwards in defeating the University of Lynchburg, 3-0, on Wednesday at a rainy Battleground, in a match marred by a 45-minute lightning delay. The Eagles improve to 4-1-1 on the season.

The Eagles provided pressure from the start, and the early effort paid off at 16:06, as junior Josh Kirkland (Richmond, Va. / Deep Run) scored on an assist from freshman Carter Berg (Reston, Va. / South Lakes). UMW continued to find opportunities, but would not convert on any before the game was paused with 8:11 remaining in the half. After the delay, the score remained 1-0 to halftime.

The game remained 1-0 until the 75th minute, when Berg scored near post on an assist from senior Jeremy Hokenson (Fredericksburg, Va. / Courtland). Less than five minutes later, Hokenson capped the scoring on an assist from Julian Schmugge (Towson, Md. / Loyola Blakefield).

The Eagles led in shots, 23-3, as well as corner kicks, 14-2. UMW senior goalkeeper Ken Kurtz (Katonah, NY / Somers) made a pair of saves in gaining his fourth shutout of the season.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they visit North Carolina Wesleyan College at 3:00 p.m.
