#17 UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 14-8, for Taghon's 1st Victory

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-2 advantage thanks to five straight goals in a 14-8 victory over Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, Va. The victory was the first for Eagle Head Coach Maddie Taghon in her head coaching career.

The Eagles scored first in the opening minute, as Kayla Sarazin scored 49 seconds into action. After a pair of Hornet goals, the Eagles reeled off five straight goals in the key stretch of the game. Freshman Erin Steinberg started the run with a goal assisted by Sarazin at 22:42, and Sarazin added her second of the day two minutes later. Freshman Katie Blair followed at 16:23, and Clare Madden added another with a free position score at 15:29. Kennedy King became the fifth Eagle to score with 14:54 left in upping the lead to 6-2.

Madden added her second of the day with 8:29 remaining as Shenandoah scored three of four to draw to within 7-5. Sarazin's third of the day was key with 4:20 left before halftime, as it gave UMW an 8-5 halftime edge.

In the second half, UMW started with goals from Sarazin and Blair and never looked back, scoring six of the first seven goals of the second frame. After a Shenandoah score, the Eagles added four straight from four different players to up the lead to 14-6. Blair, Steinberg, Sarazin, and Rebecca Pullen scored in the run. The Hornets scored the final two goals to pull to within 14-8 at the final horn.

Sarazin led UMW with five goals and two assists, while Blair added three goals. UMW keeper Reilly Miller made seven saves, while Grace Clarke led with five ground balls. Sarazin hauled in seven draw controls.

The Eagles led in shots, 31-23, as well as ground balls, 17-15. UMW won 15 of 24 draw controls.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
