UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 15-14, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Shenandoah University, 15-14, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore J.D. Nozemack led the Eagles with 5 goals and 2 assists.

The Eagles got on the board first after a failed clear attempt by SU allowing Chase Kapuscienski to get the first goal of the game. SU responded 30 seconds later with their first goal of the game. The Hornets would add two more goals before Nozemack would answer with his first of the game. In the final minute of the first SU had a big save on a Kevin Cruz shot and ended the first quarter with a 1 goal lead.

UMW tied the game with the first goal of the second quarter from a shot by Nozemack. The Hornets would then go on a 3-goal run before Nozemack knotted his third goal of the game The Eagles entered halftime down by 2 goals.

The third quarter saw the Eagles take control of the game. Logan Green brought the Eagles within one with his goal to start the second half. Green would then assist Nick Clingan to tie the game at 6-6. Kevin Cruz would give the Eagles the lead with back-to-back goals. Kapuscienski would extend the lead with a his second goal of the day. The Eagles would add two more goals to the quarter from Kristophe Newman and Nozemack to take the Eagles into the fourth quarter with a 11-6 lead.

Hunter Tipton would start the Eagle scoring off in the fourth quarter to give the Eagles a 12-6 lead. The Hornets would respond with back-to back goals. Quintin Ricci would add a goal after winning the face-off. SU would net a goal less than a minute later. After a good clear by UMW Brandon Davis brought the score to 14-9. After a goal by SU, Nozemack would score his final goal of the game. SU scored 4 unanswered goals but UMW's defense held strong to come out with the win.

Quintin Ricci led the team with 16 groundballs. Colin Mahoney caused two turnovers. Sam Pugliese picked up 4 groundballs while Jack Sweetak picked up three. Lucas Whittie made 10 saves in goal.

The Eagles outshot the Hornets 43-32, won 22-32 faceoffs, and were 13-13 on clears.

UMW will be back in action at home as they host McDaniel on Wednesday with game time at 3:30 p.m.
