UMW Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Southern Virginia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with Southern Virginia University, falling in game one, 5-4, before erupting in the second to win, 15-5.

In the opener, the Eagles jumped ahead with three runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. David Lambertson connected for a two-run double, and came around to score on an error. The Knights tied the score with two in the sixth, but the Eagles went back ahead with one of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Norman Holcomb RBI single.

SVU scored two pivotal runs in the eighth, the last on a balk, to gain the victory. Garrett Lyons had a pair of doubles, and Holcoomb added a pair of singles for UMW. Cole Gabriele took the loss with two unearned runs in two innings of relief.

In the second game, the Eagles fell behind, 5-1, but immediately chipped away, scoring one in the third as Lyons scored singling on an errant throw on a stolen base attempt. That run was the start of 14 straight Eagle runs for a 15-5 win.

In the fourth, Mike Flosser walked with the bases loaded to drive in one run, and Lambertson singled to add another. Norman Holcomb reached on a fielder's choice to plate the third run of the frame.

The Eagles added two in the fifth on a Sam Freeborne sacrifice fly and a passed ball. UMW scored seven runs in the seventh, as Lyons drove in two with a double, Lambertson knocked in two more with a single, and Stephen Johnston knocked a three-run homer. UMW added another in the eighth on a fielder's choice from Flosser.

Lyons singled and doubled, while Lambertson, Holcomb, Marcel Barrett, Kevin France, and Walker Chilton each had a pair of hits. Senior Tyler Ray went the distance to gain the win, allowing one earned run on six hits in nine innings, with four walks and nine strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Roanoke College at 3 p.m.
