Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted early in game one and used a grand slam from senior Stephen Johnston in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from the College of New Rochelle, 10-2 and 7-0, on Saturday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season.

In the opener, UMW plated five runs in the first. Junior left fielder Tyler Ray led off with a single and scored on a double from senior second baseman Marcel Barrett. After a walk to freshman center fielder Norman Holcomb, Johnston drove in one run with a single to center, and junior Garrett Lyons drove in Holcomb on a fielder's choice. Junior Christian Hague walked and David Lambertson singled to load the bases, and Nick Bass was hit by a pitch to score one run, and senior catcher Kevin France singled to right to score Lyons.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the second. Holcomb walked and stole second before Johnston walked. Lyons singled to load the bases, and Holcomb scored on a double play. Lambertson followed with an RBI single to push the lead to 7-0.

After the Blue Angels scored a run in the fourth, the Eagles answered with two in the bottom of the inning, as Lambertson drove in a pair of runs with a double to right field. New Rochelle added a run in the fifth, and the Eagles capped the scoring with an RBI single from Bass in the sixth.

Lambertson had three hits and three RBI, while Holcomb had a pair of hits and a walk for UMW. Barrett added a pair of hits as well. Junior Robert Cross gained the win, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings, walking one and striking out three. Cole Bariele and Bass each pitched scoreless innings of relief.

In game two, the Eagles gained the lead with a Holcomb RBI single, and held a 1-0 lead to the fifth. Ray reached on an error with one out, and Barrett singled. Holcomb walked to load the bases, and Johnston hit a grand slam to left center to break the game open. The Eagles scored runs in the sixth on a Rochelle Rochelle wild pitch and passed ball.

Johnston's hit led the offense, while Holcomb added a hit, walk, run scored and RBI. Senior lefty Hank Biggs gained the win, allowing three hits and no runs in five innings, walking one and striking out two. Johnston pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out a pair.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Angels at 1:00 p.m.
