Albert Scores Five Goals to Lead #8 UMW Women's Lacrosse Past #13 Washington & Lee, 10-8

Senior Julia Albert scored five goals to lead eighth-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past thirteenth-ranked Washington & Lee University , 10-8, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, VA. The Eagles open the season 1-0. Senior Hanna Ashby had an excellent day in goal as she made 10 saves. 

In the early going, the two went back-and-forth. The Generals got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead just 1:06 in. Albert tied the game as she scored her first goal of the day on an assist by Mackenzie Maguire with 24:48 left in the half. Washington & Lee and added another goal with 22:56, but just 34 seconds later Allison Davis knotted the game at two. 

The Generals then took advantage of a man-up opportunity and scored to take a 3-2 lead with 16:57 left. Eight minutes passed and both teams failed to score until Paige Haskins broke up the drought with a score at the 8:28 mark to tie the game at 3-3. Just 18 seconds later Washington & Lee scored a goal and then added another goal with 4:07 left in the half to go up 5-3. Kristen Kunaniec closed the scoring for the half as she scored with just 3:25 remaining and the Eagles went into the half down 5-4. 

Albert opened the scoring in the second half as she scored unassisted just 1:36 in to tie the game at 5 a piece. The Generals answered with a goal to retake the lead 6-5 with 26:11 left. The two teams clamped down on defense over the next 12 minutes as neither offense was able to score a goal. 

Albert broke the scoring drought with her third goal of the game at the 13:30 mark to knot the game at 6. Mackenzie Maguire gave the Eagles their first lead of the game, 7-6, on a free position shot with 11:34 remaining. From there, Albert added another goal with 10:04 to play and then Maguire added another goal on a free position shot with 9:08 remaining to put UMW ahead 9-6. 

The Generals answered with two goals and with 6:01 left in the game, UMW found themselves ahead 9-8. Albert scored her fifth goal of the game with 1:50 left that put the game away and helped the Eagles win 10-8.

Sarah Hampton picked up three ground balls to lead the Eagles. Albert had five draw controls and Rylie Cole had four draw controls. UMW won the ground ball battle, 13-9, and out-shot the Generals 27-23. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Shenandoah for a game at 4 p.m.
