White's Seven Goals Lead UMW Men's Lacrosse Past Shenandoah, 14-8, on Friday Evening

Senior Chris White tallied seven goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team past Shenandoah University, 14-8, on Friday evening in Winchester, VA. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season. 

Shane McKenzie got the scoring started at the 8:40 mark in the first quarter to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. Chase Kapuscienski scored a goal just 2:39 later to put UMW up 2-0. White capped the scoring in the first half on an assist from Vinny Smiroldo with 5:17 to play. The Eagles defense played excellent as they didn't allow a goal and Billy Senicola made five saves in the quarter.

White kept the scoring going for UMW as he scored just 2:55 in and gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead. Shenandoah got on the board with 9:36 to play, but a goal from Smiroldo on an assist from McKenzie kept the Eagles up four, 5-1. The Hornets added another goal, and then Cole Hogan of the season with 5:21 to put the game at 6-2. Again the Hornets answered with a goal, but Kapuscienski scored with 1:35 left on an assist from Logan Green to put UMW up 7-3 heading into the half. 

White got the scoring started again in the third quarter as he put one home on an assist from Hogan just 2:45 in. The Hornets got a goal back in a man-up situation with 9 minutes left to put the score at 8-4. White added another goal on an assist from Hogan with 6:45 left and just 11 seconds later, Hogan scored on an assist from Smiroldo to put UMW up 10-4. Just a minute and 14 seconds later, White scored his fifth of the day. White capped the quarter with yet another goal on an assist from Green with 2:37 left and the Eagles held a 12-4 lead going into the fourth. 

The Hornets got on the board first in the fourth quarter and then added another at the 10:21 mark to pull within six, 12-6. White scored his seventh and final goal with 8:22 left in the game. Green added a goal for the Eagles with 6:14 remaining on an assist from McKenzie. Shenandoah added two more goals before the clock ran out but UMW held on to win 14-8.

The Eagles outshot the Hornets 52-29, won the ground ball battle 44-31, and won 21 out of the 26 face-offs.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday as they will travel to McDaniel at 4 p.m.
