The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team scored early and often to defeat Hampden-Sydney College 5-0 on Saturday evening in the UMW Soccer Classic. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season. 

On an evening where thunder interrupted game play in the first match, UMW was forced to play on the turf. The Eagles came out ready to play as they scored in the second minute, in the second conescutive game, to take a 1-0 lead on a goal from Joe Hatcher that was assisted by Gary Foley.

Five minutes later, Ryan Van Maanen netted his first goal on the season after an assist from Idrissa Barrie. In the 12th minute, UMW stretched the lead out to 3-0 on a goal from Gabriel Soriano. After even play over the last 32 minutes of the first half, UMW held a 3-0 lead at half. 

Just 31 seconds into the second half, Barrie scored his first of the season unassisted to put UMW up 4-0. Justin Carey capped the scoring for the Eagles as he netted a goal on an assist from Soriano in the 51st minute. The two teams played even the rest of the match and UMW held on to a convincing 5-0 win.

The Eagles outshot Hampden-Sydney 13-11 and had eight corners on the night. Ken Kurtz came up with five saves. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
