UMW Baseball Raps Out 22 Hits in 20-3 Win Over St. Mary's on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for an eight-run third inning, and kept on hitting in a 20-3 victory over St. Mary's College of Md. on Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 17-15-1 overall, and 6-8 in CAC play.

The Seahawks scored a run after a leadoff triple in the first and added a solo home run in the third to take a two-run advantage before the Eagles struck in the third. David Lambertson led off with a single and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Tyler Ray grounded to second to score Lambertson and cut the deficit to 2-1. Ramsis Ruiz singled and stole second before scoring on a Christian Hague single. Hague stole second and Stephen Johnston walked before Mark Smith hit a three-run home run to left field off the scoreboard. Nick Bass then singled ahead of RBI doubles from David Slupek and Kevin France.

The Eagles added three in the fourth, as Smith singled and Bass walked. Smith advanced to third on a popup with third base unoccupied, and Bass stole second, before France singled to score a run. Bass scored on a Lambertson single, and Ray followed with an RBI groundout.

In the sixth, UMW scored two on a Christian Hague single and error, and the Eagles capped the day with a seven-run eighth, highlighted by a Slupek grand slam and a two-run single from Johnston.

Every Eagles in the lineup had at least two hits, with Ruiz, Johnston, Bass, and Slupek each posting three hits, with Slupek driving in five. Robert Cross gained the win for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings, with two walks and six strikeouts.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit Frostburg State University for a CAC doubleheader starting at noon.
