#10 UMW Women's Lax Falls at #1 Salisbury, 11-10, in Final Minutes on Saturday

Box Score

The 10th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team nearly pulled off an upset of top-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday, falling 11-10 to the Sea Gulls on the road in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.

The Eagles opened the scoring on an unassisted tally from junior Mackenzie Maguire at 23:18. With offense at a premium in the first half, the Eagles added another at 14:33 on a Julia Albert tally, and the lead swelled to 3-0 less than one minute later, as Paige Haskins scored on a Holly Hudson pass.

After Salisbury found the nets with 11:48 left, Maguire answered with 8:50 left before intermission. The Sea Gulls scored the final two of the first half, and added another to start the second, tying the score at 4-4 less than a minute into the second half, and seemed to have the momentum.

But Albert scored again at 28:22, which kickstarted an Eagle run. Haskins scored on another Hudson assist with 24:27 remaining, and Hudson followed unasissted at 23:53 to push the lead to 7-4. Albert followed on a Kennedy King assist with 18:41 remaining, and Haskins tallied her third of the day on an Albert assist with 16:05 on the clock.

Salisbury trimmed the lead to 9-5 with a score with 7:58 to go, and added another with 6:16 left. The Sea Gulls scored again with 5:46 on the clock to trim the deficit to 9-7, but the Eagles gained the draw and used a score from Allison Davis to return the lead to 10-7 with 4:58 left.

The Sea Gulls would not go quietly, scoring with 3:55 left to draw to within 10-8, and cutting the margin to 10-9 with 3:55 left. Salisbury tied the score with 3:13 remaining, and found the game winner with just 1:09 remaining, as they took the lead for the only time in the contest.

Both teams took 28 shots in the contest, and the Eagles held a 13-11 edge in ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Hanna Ashby made 10 stops in goal for UMW, while Gianna Falcone had nine for Salisbury. Paige Childers scored seven draw controls, and Rylie Cole added four for UMW.

The Eagles will be back in action on April 21 when they host Marymount University for senior day. Opening draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
