Sophomore Christian Hague hit a pair of home runs as part of a four-hit day to lead a five home run attack as the University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Southern Virginia University, 12-7, on Wednesday in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles pick up a key Capital Athletic Conference win, improving to 5-6 in league play and 16-12-1 overall.

After two scoreless frames, the Eagles erupted for seven runs in the third. With one out, Mason Riser was hit by a pitch and Garrett Lyons walked before Ramsis Ruiz singled home Riser. Hague followed with a three-run homer to up the lead to 4-0. Stephen Johnston walked and moved to second on a hit from Mark Smith, who would see his consecutive hits streak run to seven straight at bats before coming to an end. Nick Bass reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners, and Kevin France followed with a three-run homer to push the margin to 7-0.

After the Knights got on the board with a run in the fourth, the Eagles answered with one in the fifth, as Smith connected for his fifth home run of the season. The Knights plated a run in the sixth, but the Eagles scored twice in the seventh, as Hague and Johnston hit back to back home runs.

In the eighth, the Eagles saw Lyons score on an error and Hague follow with an RBI single. The Knights scored three in the eighth to trim the margin to 12-5, and added another pair in the ninth.

Hague finished the day with two home runs and five RBI. Smith had a home run and a pair of singles, while Johnston, Ruiz, and Lyons all scored two runs.

Robert Cross gained the win for UMW, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings, with four walks and four strikeouts.

The Eagles will visit Salisbury University on Saturday for another key CAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
