UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at #17 CNU, 8-5, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team was defeated at Christopher Newport University, 8-5, on Wednesday night in Newport News, Va. UMW slips to 7-6 overall, and 3-2 in the CAC.

CNU got on the board just 54 seconds into the game as they converted on a man-up opportunity and then added a second goal with 12:02 left in the first quarter. Cole Hogan scored the Eagles first goal on a Shane McKenzie assist with 8:50 to play to bring the Eagles within one, 2-1. Owen Dingman scored his first goal of the game with three minutes left to tie the game at 2-2. CNU tallied a third goal in the quarter with 2:53 left and they took a 3-2 lead into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Captains scored two in a row to take a 5-2 lead with 12:40 left. Dingman scored the lone goal in the quarter for the Eagles on an assist from McKenzie with 6:04 remaining. Both teams were shutout for the rest of the quarter and CNU took a 5-3 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, both teams were held to one goal a piece as the defenses played very well. With 6:04 to play the Captains scored to go up 6-3. Chase Kapuscienski then put the Eagles down two, 6-4, with just 56 seconds left in the quarter.

The Captains struck first in the fourth quarter as they scored after a failed clear by UMW with 9:01 to play. Conor Healy got the Eagles on the board on another assist from McKenzie with 6:57 remaining and that brought the score to 7-5. CNU scored their eighth goal with 4:31 left and that would do it in scoring as the Captains held on to win 8-5.

Robert Tata picked up a team-high six ground balls. Billy Senicola made 13 saves and picked up five ground balls on the day. 

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they will host Salisbury at 1 p.m.
