Junior Hope Lockwood score four goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team past Messiah College, 14-10, on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. UMW defeats Messiah College for the first time in four meetings. The Eagles improve to 8-1 on the season.

UMW got out to a fast start as they scored the first three goals of the game. Lockwood scored the first on an assist from Mackenzie Maguire, and then Allison Davis and Holly Hudson scored the next two goals unassisted with 18:03 remaining in the first half. 

Messiah then scored the next two goals to cut UMW's lead to 3-2 with 13:42 left. From there, Davis added another goal on a free position shot. Maguire scored and then Lockwood added her second goal of the game to put UMW up 6-2 with 3:41 to play.

Messiah scored on a free position shot with 2:25 remaining, but Julia Albert scored on an assist from Maguire with 1:16 left to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.

The Falcons scored the first goal just 1:12 into the second half to cut into the lead, 7-4. Lockwood answered as she scored on an assist from Albert and then Albert scored her own goal on an assist from Hudson to put UMW up five, 9-4.

Messiah scored three straight goals to put the game at 9-7, with 25:05 left. Savannah Boyd scored her lone goal of the game just 26 seconds later to put the Eagles back up three, 10-7. The Falcons answered and scored three straight goals to tie the game at 10 with 14:39 remaining.

Davis scored on an Albert assist and then Lockwood scored her final goal of the game with 12:33 to play as UMW regained control, 12-10. UMW put the game away as Albert scored, and then Maguire added a goal that put UMW up 14-10 for good.

Kirsten Littlefield led the Eagles with six draw controls. Paige Haskins picked up three ground balls and caused three turnovers on the day. Shannon Bremer made 10 saves for UMW.

The Eagles picked up 23 ground balls and converted on 16-20 clears. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host St. Mary's (Md.) at 4 p.m. in a conference showdown.
