UMW Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill With Marymount in CAC Action

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader with Marymount University, dropping the opener, 12-6, and winning the nightcap, 9-6, in games played at Plumeri Park on the campus of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The Eagles move to 12-7-1 overall, and 1-1 in league play.

In the opener, the Saints jumped ahead with a run in the first and six more in the third. The Eagles battled back with three in the fourth, thanks to a David Slupek two-run home run, and an RBI fielder's choice by Tyler Ray. Slupek added an RBI single in the fifth to pull the Eagles to within 7-4, but the Saints scored two in the sixth and three in the ninth. UMW tacked on two runs in the bottom of the ninth, as Nicholas Bass and Ray each provided sacrifice flies.

Slupek led the Eagles with the home run, single, and three RBI, while Stephen Johnston singled and doubled, and Garrett Lyons and Mason Riser each had two hits. Christian Hague took the loss, allowing seven earned runs in 5.1 innings, with two walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagles scored twice in the first and twice in the second to grab an early cushion. Ramsis Ruiz reached with one out in the first, and moved to second on a catcher's interference, which allowed Johnston to reach. Hague reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Ruiz to score, and Johnston scored on a wild pitch.

In the second, Bass singled and scored on a double from Kevin France. France would score on a double by Ruiz. UMW added another in the third, as Hague and Slupek gained singles and Hague scored on a sacrifice fly from Mason Riser.

After a Marymount run in the fourth cut the lead to 5-1, the Eagles added three in the fifth, all coming on a three-run home run by Garrett Lyons. After the Eagles scored once in the eighth on a Bryce Runey double, followed by a run scoring double play, the Saints rallied for five in the ninth, but the Eagles held on with Joe Thompson gaining the save with two-thirds of spotless relief.

France had a double and two singles to lead the offense, with Lyons providing the big long ball. Ruiz singled and doubled as well. Hank Biggs gained the win on the mo9und, scattering two hits and one earned run in six innings, with six strikeouts and two walks. Thompson struck out both men he faced in gaining the save.

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they host Southern Virginia University at 3:30 pm in another CAC contest.
