UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to Geneseo, 11-9, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-9 decision to Geneseo State University on Saturday at the Battleground to slip to 4-4 on the season. 

The Eagles started with a flourish, as junior Chris White scored on an assist from junior Robert Tata just 32 seconds into the contest. Then, just seven seconds later, sophomore Kaleb Hunter scored following an Eagle faceoff win. With 12:28 left in the first, junior Shane McKenzie scored unassisted to give the Eagles an early 3-0 cushion.

The Knights would battle back, however, scoring three straight in the final 10 minutes of the first to tie the score, and adding another to take a 4-3 advantage early in the second. Cole Hogan started an Eagle run on a McKenzie assist with 11:06 remaining to knot the score, and goals from Will Mortimer at 8:59 and Owen Dingman at 8:32 left, both assisted by McKenzie, gave UMW a 6-4 lead.

The back and forth contest continued into the third quarter, as Geneseo scored three straight to take a 7-6 lead. Hogan scored on yet another assist from McKenzie with 11:34 left in the fourth to tie the score at 7-7, but Genseo answered with 8:01 left on a man up chance to regain the lead. Once again, the Eagles countered, as Chase Kapuscienski scored unassisted with 7:46 left to knot the score at 8-8.

Geneseo scored with 5:12 left in regulation to regain the lead, and added another key score with 3:59 left. The Eagles rallied back quickly, as Hogan scored unassisted with 3:41 remaining, but Geneseo added another with 1:01 remaining to regain the two-goal margin.

McKenzie posted a goal and four assists for UMW, while Hogan added three goals. Junior Billy Senicola made 16 saves in goal for UMW, Robert Tata led with six ground balls.

Geneseo led in shots, 41-26, while the Eagles held a 12-11 edge in faceoffs. The Eagles were 13-20 on clears, while Geneseo went 11-18. Geneseo led in ground balls, 33-30.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Frostburg State University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 4:00 p.m.
